Air Motor

Rotary-vane air motors convert compressed air into rotary mechanical power, offering variable speed, instant reversing and stall tolerance in a compact, non-electric package suited to hazardous and wet environments.

Explosion-Proof Power
for Hazardous Areas

An air motor is a pneumatic drive that turns the energy of compressed air into shaft rotation. In the dominant rotary-vane design, air admitted into an eccentric chamber pushes against sliding vanes set in a rotor; the pressure difference across each vane produces torque and the expanding air is exhausted through a muffler. Output is controlled by simply throttling the air or regulating its pressure: more pressure gives more torque, more flow gives more speed, and torque rises as the motor is loaded down toward stall.

Because there are no windings, brushes or contacts, an air motor cannot overheat, burn out or create sparks. It can be stalled or overloaded indefinitely, reversed instantly with a valve, run in any orientation, washed down, and used in explosive or very hot and cold atmospheres where electric motors need expensive protection. The trade-offs are higher energy cost per kW than an electric drive, noise at the exhaust, and the need for clean, dry and (for most models) lubricated air.
